Sense and sensibility (film screening)

29.december ,2017 in our Department film screening of sence and sensibility organized by MILAN SIR  .

About the novel

★. Sense and Sensibility is a 1995 American period drama film directed by Ang Leeand based on Jane Austen's 1811 novel of the same name. Actress Emma Thompson wrote the script and stars as Elinor Dashwood, while Kate Winsletplays Elinor's younger sister Marianne. The story follows the Dashwood sisters, members of a wealthy English family of landed gentry, as they must deal with circumstances of sudden destitution. They are forced to seek financial security through marriage.

While reading Sense and Sensibility, one of the main things I noticed was the different ways in which the title of the book could be interpreted. From the footnotes of the novel, we learn the definitions of the two words;

Sense – possessing judgment and intelligence (303).

Sensibility – capacity for refined emotional response to feelings and experiences, involving delicate sensitivity to moral and aesthetic issues (303).

From one perspective, the character of Elinor could be considered as having ‘Sense,’ while Marianne would be acting out of ‘Sensibility.’ Austen begins the novel by describing her two main characters and how they appear in comparison to each other.

CHARACTER chart of novel

-: The basic idea of the film (novel) is that :-

It is a story about Two character who represents the title Sense and Sensibility. Elinor who was presented as sense and she was very practical girl, which is like neoclassical character and Marianne presented as sensibility who was very sensitive. Both the characters has equal importance. The story is about Dashwood family. Henry Dashwood who dies in the opening of the movie and he has two wives. First wife has son John Dashwood and second wife Mrs. Dashwood has three daughters Elinor, Marianne and Margaret. As per their costume after the death of father all the property goes to the son of the family. So John has all properties, his wife Fanny who was very greedy, she throws Mrs. Dashwood and her daughters out of the Dashwood estate.

The Theme:
I love Jane Austen's novels.Love has always given me this wonderful, happy feeling. What can I say? I am a girly, hopeless romantic. She not only writes about love, but as many have noticed Jane Austen does a wonderful job of studying human characteristics. She makes wonderful, true to life characters (and sometimes caricatures.) She develops setting so very well also. Some say her books don't have a plot, but that, I believe is because of the plots subtlety. She does not bang you over the head with adventures and disasters, that much is true. Sense and Sensibility is one of my favorite novels of hers, (or anyone's) and I think it is safe to say I thoroughly enjoyed this movie adaptation.
