Milton work can be divided into two parts (1)
Early poetry and (2,b)Later poetry.
1) Early poetry:
Milton early poetry is lyrical. The important poems of the early period are :The Hymn on the Nativity (1629); L'Allegro, Il Penseroso(1632), Lycidas (1637); and Comus(1934). His prose work like Aeropigicta also belong to this period. The Hymn ,written when Milton was only twenty one, shows that his lyrical genius was already highly developed. The complementary poems Allegro ( the joyous or happy man) Il Penserose, are full of very pleasing description of rural scenes and recreation in spring and Autumn. The air is sweet birds are singing, a multitudes of sights sounds, fragrance fill all the senses.

(Lycidas);
Lycidas is a pastrol elegy and it is the greatest of its type in English literature. It was written to mourn the death of Miton friend, Edward king, but it also contains serious criticism of Contemporary religion and politics. Milton is no more the inheritor of old age but the prophet of a new age.

(Comus-1634):
Comus marks the development of the Milton's mind from the merely pastoral and idyllic to a more serious and purposive tendency. The puritanic element antagonistic to the prevailing looseness in religion and politics become more prominent. But in spite of it's serious and didactic strain,it retains the lyrical tone which is so characteristic of Milton's early poetry.

(Areopagitica)
In Milton's prose work. Areopagitica has perhaps the most permanent interest and is worth reading. In Milton's time there was a law forbidding the publication of books without the approval of official censor.Books were published only if they were liked by the people nominated by the king. Milton protest against this practice in Areopagitica.
