TO THE LIGHTHOUSE TASK ( THINKING ACTIVITY )

 1.....
How can you explain that 'what' Virginia Woolf wanted to say (for example, the complexity of human relationship, the everyday battles that people are at in their relationship with near and dear ones, the struggle of a female artist against the values of middle/upper class society etc) can only be said in the way she has said? (Key: The 'How' of the narrative technique is to be discussed along with features of Stream of Consciousness technique which helps Woolf to put in effective manner what she experienced in abstractions.)

 Ans....

Virginia woolf as woman writer when we seat that time we can say that compare  to men all women are more sensitive and this quality we can feel also in writing of womens , so, ere in this novel we can find that how she portrayed minute observasion of all the situations and relation between all characters. Trough which strams of consciousness technique  she expressed well . she portrayed the psychology of characters . in character of mrs. Ramsay and lily Briscoe, we find the struggle of women how james  hatred father ,
“ had there woman axe, handy ,a poker , or any weapon that would have gashed  hole in is father’s breast and killed him, there and then , james would have seized it” .PART…1
SO, we can say that she represents good psyche and their relation , and these type of sensitive  or social problems women writers or film shows well in many movies also. for  ex. Lipstick under my burkha “ script writer as he all ankartika  shrivastam.

2…Do you agree: "The novel is both the tribute and critique of Mrs. Ramsay"? (Key: Take some clues from the painting of Mrs Ramsay drawn by Lily Briscoe and the article by Andre Viola and Glenn Pedersen. Can we read Mrs. R in context of the idea of Ideal Indian Woman - Karyeshu dasi, Karaneshu manthri; Bhojeshu mata, Shayaneshu rambha; Kshamayeshu dharithri, Roopeshu lakshmi; Satkarma yukta, Kuladharma pathni.
ans....
The novel is both the tribute and critique as per my perspective . mrs. Ramsay we know that she comes out as there was artcle  of faith that ‘ woman can’t write  and paint ‘. She emerges as well cared  mother and self sacrifies wman woolf gives more importance on her character of lily Briscoe . in the center part of the novel . mrs. Ramsay dies but she remains alive into the heart of the readers.

Considering symbolically, does the Lighthouse stand for Mrs. Ramsay or the narrator (Virginia Woolf herself who is categorically represented by Lily)? (Key: Take help from the presentation on Symbolism to connect Mrs. Caroline Ramsay with Lighthouse. Secondly, the narrator / author cannot fully disappear from the novel and thus the stoicism of Lily to paint and thus prove that she can paint, is symbolically presented in stoicism of Lighthouse. Read 'lighthouse' symbol from presentation slide with this insight to connect lighthouse with the narrator. Give your concluding remarks in the comment below in this blog )

Mrs. Ramsay is lighthouse for her family . she is ideal women taking care of husband , children and guest  she is very good hosters.she knows how to pamper the male ego. Lily brisco is house for the woman who think out of the box and have kind of rebellious thoughts . but at the end it is all are narrates .

4..In the article by Joseph Blotner, two myths are patterned together. Name the myths? How they are zeroed down to the symbols of 'Window' and 'Lighthouse'? How does the male phallic symbol represent feminine Mrs. Ramsay? (Key: The strokes of light-beams. . .

 ans..
There were two myths Oedipus myth and pagan myth .  as window works as bring new airin our house . we can  interpret it as widow brings freshness  in our mind . and t elps to tack the right decision. So as compare to society it stands positive thing.
To the lighthouse is based on greek myth . in this novel woolf use various myth joseph blotner has also use the famous myth the of knows and rhea is relation between father and mother knows has children . but they are so. Innocent
Here , rhea is represented as mother . mth of homeric hymns it is the praise if divinity or god . in this reference we find that how metaphor became reality . use in the Homeric hymns metaphor is more important, literature is full of metaphor .

5…What do you understand by the German term 'Künstlerroman'? How can you justify that 'To The Lighthouse' is 'Künstlerroman' novel? (Key: http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/325047/Kunstlerroman)

Ans .....

General information about the term "Kunstlerroman".....

Künstlerroman, (German: “artist’s novel”), class of Bildungsroman, or apprenticeship novel, that deals with the youth and development of an individual who becomes—or is on the threshold of becoming—a painter, musician, or poet. The classic example is James Joyce’s Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916).

To the Lighthouse’ is many ways a ‘Kunstlerroman’ novel. Here, we find two artists growth. Beginning of the novel we see that Lily was started to her painting and the middle of the novel we find that she left her painting and the end of the novel we find that she complete her novel so here we find that artists growth in mind means through her all ling period she continuously thinking about her painting, so here we can say that growth of an artist’s mind. It also deals with ‘arrogant rejection of the commonplace life’, in this novel the character of Lily makes it ‘Kunstlerroman’ novel.

"... the wages of obedience is death, and the daughter that reproduces mothering to perfection, including child-bearing, already has on her cheeks the pallor of death. One reminded here of various texts by Lucy Irigaray, in which she attacks mothers for being, however unwillingly, accomplices in the patriarchal system of oppression." (Viola). In light of this remark, explain briefly Lily's dilemma in 'To The Lighthouse'.

Ans......

In brief, as 2nd answer says, it also criticises women, who believed in sacrificing and obedience of patriarchal world, who are ready to be ruled over her by patriarchal beliefs and society. Lily’s dilemma presents this. She has very strong rejection about patriarchal beliefs and throughout the novel; she wants to be equal as men without surrendering herself.

You have compared the 'beginning' and the 'ending' of the novel and the film adaptation of the novel directed by Colin Gregg (you can see it again in the embedded video below this). Do you think that the novel is more poignant than the movie? If yes, do you ascribe the fact that the power of words is much greater than that of the screen / visuals?

Ans......

Movie is very much related to the novel but at some extent novel is more poignant than the movie because Woolf describe many dialogues are an effective way.
For example: Beginning of the novel is like these; “Yes, of course, if it’s fine tomorrow,” said Mrs. Ramsay. “But you’ll have to be up with the lark,” Narrator narrates story from mother’s perspective. Here I gave some lines to the original work;
Her tribute took that form if, as she vaguely supposed, a picture must be a tribute.
Chpter:11- No, she thought, putting together some of the pictures he had cut out— a refrigerator, a mowing machine, a gentleman in evening dress— children never forget. For this reason, it was so important what one said, and what one did, and it was a relief when they went to bed. For now she need not think about anybody. She could be herself, by herself. And that was what now she often felt the need of—to think; well, not even to think. To be silent; to be alone. All the being and the doing, expansive, glittering, vocal, evaporated; and one shrunk, with a sense of solemnity, to being oneself, a wedge-shaped core of darkness, something invisible to others. Although she continued to knit, and sat upright, it was thus that she felt herself; and this self having shed its attachments was free for the strangest adventures. When life sank down for a moment, the range of experience seemed limitless.
Whole paragraph shows us to Lily’s thinking process and routine work of Mrs. Ramsay.  So many situations going on in between its also poisonous than movie.
At the end- “They will have landed,” and she felt that she had been right. They had not needed to speak. They had been thinking the same things and he had answered her without her asking him anything.
Quickly, as if she were recalled by something over there, she turned to her canvas. There it was—her picture. Yes, with all its greens and blues, its lines running up and across, its attempt at something. That all situations are affect reader while seeing movie that feelings may not be came out..

How do you interpret the last line of the novel (It was done; it was finished. Yes, she thought, laying down her brush in extreme fatigue, I have had my vision.) with reference to the ending of the film (After the final stroke on the canvass with finishing touch, Lily walks inside the house. As she goes ante-chamber, the light and dark shade makes his face play hide-and-seek. She climbs stairs, puts her brush aside, walks through the dark and light to enter her room. Gently closes the door - speaks: "Closed doors, open windows" - lies on the bed and with some sort of satisfaction utters: "Dearest Briscoe, you are a fool".)

Ans ....
Last line of the novel can be interpreted with two ways. First, ‘it is completed…’ means now, she proved to patriarchal world that, ‘women can paint, women can write’ and second, she completed Mrs. Ramsay’s painting and found her vision means her mental confusion or dilemma about Mrs. Ramsay’s character is clear. With reference to the movie, Lily favours Mrs. Ramsay’s character and she accepted her character with using her thinking like, ‘closed doors, open windows’.

Ans...
Fairy tale 'Fisherman and his wife', why is it here? In this fairy tale wife is a very greedy person. Demanding more and more from a magic fish. Here Mrs. Ramsay is constantly denying to go to the light house excusing that weather is not good. It also suggests that women's desire and willfulness is more dangerous than the male's. But it seems that the real danger is there in a male's need of self-assertion and for insisting on internal truth. It also indicating that how a Mrs. Ramsay telling a story to her children which is a harmful myth.

thank you ....
